While browsing the web, this ad appeared several times. A few weeks ago, I went on Piperlime searching for scallop-edged shorts. It's creepy that this ad has "followed" me into the future. Real life online behavioral tracking at work!
In many ways, online behavioral tracking is a lot like "who to follow" on Twitter or the "Suggested friends" boxes on Facebook. It's the same mentality.
A few weeks ago, I read an article about the "Pink slime" many fast food restaurants were using. The content of the slime was poor parts of a cow and were called "beef" by the chains. I read an article of how unsafe it was. Today, reading through the first page of the New York Times website, I saw an advertisement by Google subtitled "Ads by Google" and titled "Facts about Pink Slime."
The advertisement I received was a perfect example of online behavioral advertising. If I had turned off my settings, I may have not received the advertisement., but because I am interested in the subject, it was additional information on the topic. |
AuthorI am just another user of the Internet and a subject of online behavioral tracking and advertising. These are my stories, real life examples of online behavioral advertising I have encountered during the creation of the site. ArchivesCategories |
